How Important Are Keywords Meta Tags For SEO In 2017



Today we’re talking about keywords. Not necessarily keyword research but keywords like the metatags, URLS, stuff like that.

One of the questions we get on a regular basis is, “What do we do with a meta keywords tag? Do we still use it? Should you still fill it out?” And unequivocally the answer is forget about it! It’s just not used. Back in the day, search engines did use it. But as of 2009, Google and Bing both stated that the keywords meta tag is not something they use for indexing. Google in particular has come out very vocal about that, that really it’s a waste of time. The reason why is that back in the day SEO people use to just stuff keywords in there, put in the same word 3 or 4 times, obviously it’s going to move up the rankings. Google is pretty smart about it, they saw what people were doing, and they removed that ability.

Bing actually stated that the meta tag is not used for ranking purposes inside of Bing, if anything it might be used for a penalty purpose. If they notice that you’ve repeated several keywords within the page (like you’re trying to manipulate the search engines) that could raise up a flag and get you a penalty.

So keywords in the meta tag? Forget about it. The only thing good for it is for a SEO person like me, I look at the competition, I see what keywords they’re going after, and then I use that in my clients campaign to make them rank a lot better.

Next let’s talk about putting your keywords in your URL structure, i.e. www.BigRedSEO.com/webdesignexpert. According to Google, keywords in your URL do not matter. This was a statement that was made by Gary Illyes back in 2016, saying your shouldn’t be bothered putting them into the URL. While Google says that, every chance I get, every client that I work with, the keyword is going to go into that URL. There’s no reason for it not to! If it’s relevant to the page on the website, then you should be using keywords.

Put keywords inside your:
-Title Tag
-Description
-URL
-Content

Your keywords are supposed to be helping your user to let them find everything on your website that they need to. So if the keyword is relevant, use it in that place. Don’t over stuff it, there’s no magic number saying it has to be used 4 more times or there’s a 2% keyword density ratio…that’s all stuff that was used back in the 90s (when I started). It’s old school SEO, if your SEO company is telling you that you have to use a keywords meta tag, start running, because you’re going to get in trouble.
